Medigap (Medicare supplement plans)
Medigap insurance plans are also called Medicare supplement plans. These plans are designed to supplement the coverage gaps that exist in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B (Original Medicare). Medigap plans are not part of the Medicare health insurance program; these plans are managed and administered by private insurance companies and are mainly regulated at the state level.
Medigap plans have premiums to be paid, but they have no deductibles, and most Medicare supplement plans do not contain any copayments or coinsurance amounts to pay for health care services that you receive. Typically, the medical billing is automatically carried out between Medicare and the insurance company of your policy. You have an open enrollment period, to purchase a Medicare supplement plan, regardless of your health, when you become eligible for Medicare. As long as you continue to pay your premium, you may not be cancelled from a Medigap policy. Your Medigap premiums will likely go up in future years. Depending on the condition of your health and other factors, you may or may not be able to switch between Medigap plans, once your open enrollment period ends. Informed Choice offers a variety of Medigap plans. Many of our senior clients are very satisfied with choosing a Medigap policy as health care insurance option.
